OVERVIEW

The Legal Innovation Forum will host its second forum in Vancouver on November 20th, 2024.

This year’s full-day forum is centered on its unifying theme: Forging new directions in rapidly evolving legal ecosystem

The legal ecosystem is encountering a myriad of transformational shifts: the rapid rise of generative AI and other technologies, a generational shift in sector leadership, challenges to long-standing business models and navigating increasing complexity and risks – not only in the sector but also the broader economy.

To identify the opportunities – and mitigate evolving risks – the sector is embracing innovative approaches underpinned by leadership, fresh approaches and collaboration amongst sectoral practitioners (law firms, legal departments and third party partners).

The purpose of this year’s forum is to shine a light on the dynamics at play at the intersection of business, innovation and law, and to provide examples of how leadership and collaboration within the legal ecosystem are helping to deliver value and sustain and drive change.

PURPOSE OF FORUM

  • Review key sectoral drivers and trends at play for organizations in the region and what it means for the legal ecosystem that supports them.
  • Provide a platform for practitioners to take stock of the emerging innovation story and what it looks like on the ground.
  • Look at best practices in law firms, legal departments and their third-party partners when it comes to leveraging people, process and technology to deliver results.
  • Create a network of leading legal innovators to share knowledge and experiences to help drive change in their legal ecosystem and the organizations they support.

Program

8.20 - 8.50 am | REGISTRATION & NETWORKING BREAKFAST

8.50 - 9.00 am | WELCOME TO THE FORUM

9.00 - 9.50 am | On the ground with Generative AI - how is Generative AI transforming the legal landscape + the wider business ecosystem?

While generative artificial intelligence continues upending business models around the world and across sectors, it can also be viewed as a valuable tool to support both the business and practice of law.

Firms and legal departments are scrambling to prepare for both the disruption – and the potential opportunities – that will emerge as GenAI rapidly evolves.

Learn what the legal ecosystem needs to do to prepare, and how to take advantage of GenAI.

  • How should firms and legal departments be preparing for the rise and evolution of GenAI? (data readiness, pricing models, HR processes, mentorship, etc)
  • How can firms help their clients prepare for the new landscape to ensure a smooth transition?
  • Generative AI as a catalyst for collaboration in the legal ecosystem.

10.05 - 10.45 | FIRESIDE CHAT: ESTABLISHING THE GOAL OF A fi’S LEGAL DEPARTMENT

In conversation with:

10.45 - 11.10 | INTRO TO BREAKOUT SESSIONS - DETAILS + THEIR WHY

  • Cover the objective and goals of the breakout sessions
  • Overview of the Bridgewater 5-Step process
  • Review of the contemporary challenges

Working groups of 7: in-house lawyers + sponsors

11.10 - 12.25 | BREAKOUT SESSION 1 - (goals + problems)

Here we will focus on two areas: optimal operating structures for FI legal departments (goals) + the areas that are holding them back from these optimal states (problems).

We will look at problems in the context of contemporary challenges faced by financial institutions outlined below. Groups will select two challenges to address and identify goals to solve them and problems holding them from these goals.

Contemporary challenges faced by FIs (Each group will choose 2)

  • Credit crisis + counterparty default
  • Managing emerging domestic + international regulations
  • Regulatory inquiry
  • Black Swan events
  • Cybersecurity breach
  • Others as decided independently by groups

Key principles to consider (Goals):

  • Prioritize: While you can have virtually anything you want, you can’t have everything you want
  • Never rule out a goal because you think it’s unattainable
  • Remember that great expectations create great capabilities

Key principles to consider (Problems):

  • Be specific in identifying your problems
  • Don’t mistake a cause of a problem with the real problem
  • Distinguish big problems from small ones
  • Once you identify a problem, don’t tolerate it

12.25 - 1.15 | NETWORKING LUNCH

1.15 - 2.05| RECAP OF BREAKOUT 1 + OVERALL GROUP DISCUSSION (DIAGNOSIS)

Here we will prompt a group discussion of the outcome of the mornings sessions. We will identify (diagnose) key problems faced by financial institutions in the face of the contemporary challenges the groups have focused on.

Defining the core problems: What was learned, key themes across group, interesting patterns and outliers

Key principles to consider (diagnosis):

  • Focus on the “what is” before deciding “what to do about it.”
  • Distinguish proximate causes from root causes
  • Recognize that knowing what someone (including you) is like will tell you what you can expect from them

2.05 - 3.20 | breakout session 2 (design)

Here our participants will work in groups to design approaches to the key challenges identified in the morning sessions. The objective is to create working prototypes to core challenges faced by legal departments centered around applying novel approaches to managing people, process and technologies to deliver results.

Key principles to consider (Design):

  • Think about your problem as a set of outcomes produced by a machine
  • Think of your plan as being like a movie script in that you visualize who will do what through time
  • Write down your plan for everyone to see and to measure your progress against

3.20 - 3.40 |NETWORKING BREAK

3.40 - 4.40 | breakout session 3 (design PROTOTYPE PRESENTATIONS + DOING)

Each group will present their prototypes to the broader group. The facilitators will then select 2 and plan to report back within 60 days to the group on firm plans to focus on doing.

Key principles to consider (Doing):

  • Great planners who don’t execute their plans go nowhere
  • Good work habits are vastly underrated
  • Establish clear metrics to make certain that you are following your plan
